Bugs

Writer's picture: Day RollDay Roll

Bugs by Data East is a great example of the low-quality games that flooded the market, leading to the Video Game Crash of '83.

Using a paddle controller, you move a cursor left and right, and take out the bugs (and one lizard) before they reach the top of the screen. Periodically, another cursor or whatever appears, and you need to take it out. One hit from the other cursor thingy, and you lose a life. If a bug reaches the top of the screen, you lose a life, and a whole lot of points.

The best part of Bugs is the flash of colors that starts every game. The critters also look pretty good, if only because they're so huge and well-animated.

As far as gameplay . . . well, I have no reason to ever play this again. If you think Bugs is fun, you must see something I don't. I admit I didn't read the manual, and honestly, with games like these, I don't think I need to. Sorry, Bugs. Your bugs look cool. Your game is not.

Final Bugs for Atari 2600 review:

I recommend Bugs for Collectors only.
